The 149th edition of the Iowa State Fair is set to kick off tomorrow, and spokesperson Kathy Swift says the fairgrounds have been bustling with activity since Monday. She says the past three days are what she considers the busiest of the fairs as people move in and set up and get things ready. Swift says one of the biggest changes you’ll notice is a new one-million dollar second sky lift. She says the new lift will start at gate 10 at east 30th and Walnut and “woosh” you to the heart of the fairgrounds on Rock Island Avenue near a new eatery area. Swift says you’ll be able to look up across the street from that stop to see a brand new one-million dollar roof on the livestock pavilion. Swift says there’ll be many of the traditional favorites and plenty of politics too.She says the Harley Davidson motorcycle that Duffy Lyon is sculpting out of butter is drawing a lot of attention, and she says there’ll be lots of Democrat candidates visiting the fair too. Even with all the plans in the world, one of the biggest factors affecting the attendance at the fair can’t be controlled — the weather. Swift says they’ve been lucky the past couple of years to have good weather and she says so far this year she’s heard that it’ll be wet and she’s heard it’ll be hot. Swift says she’ll just wait to see what the weather is like when she gets up, because she can’t control it anyway. Swift says with the construction going on in Des Moines, taking a shuttle bus is one of the best ways for people to get to the fair. She says the shuttles offer free parking at three locations. Call 800-545-FAIR or surf to IowaStateFair.org on the web. Swift says you can also check I235.com to get information on roadwork heading into the fair. Swift says today (Wednesday) is the last day to buy discount tickets to the fair.
