The Class 3A quarterfinals are complete at the state high school softball tournament. Top-ranked Cedar Rapids Jefferson broke the game open with four runs in the tenth inning as the J-Hawks downed Southeast Polk 4-0. Ashley Swick’s single pushed across the first run.Laura Kelsey followed by driving in two runs with a single and says despite remaining scoreless for so long the J-Hawks never felt they were going to lose. She says sometimes it can take a while, but she knew they would come through. Mindy Heidgerken’s three-run homer to left in the fifth gave second rated North Scott the lead for good as the defending champions downed Linn-Mar 6-2.Tenth-ranked Des Moines Lincoln jumped out to an early lead and downed 8th ranked Fort Dodge before a large partisan crowd. Second baseman Erin Brese did most of the damage for the Railsplitters as she scored all three runs. Fort Dodge coach Andi Adams says Lincoln’s run in the top of the first set the tempo for the game. Fourth-ranked West Des Moines Valley jumped out to an early lead and cruised past Burlington 9-0. Valley coach Tom Bakey says they were able to get some pressure on them early by scoring first. In class 2A, top ranked Independence got by Dallas Center-Grimes 5-1 to improve to 49-1 on the season.
