The Biggest Boar — the largest hog — at this year’s Iowa State Fair weighs in a one-thousand-one-hundred-18 pounds. The boar is four years old, and last fall his owner, Gene Stoltzfus of North English, began trying to fatten him up for the contest. The animal ate between 20 to 25 pounds of corn every day and gained over three-hundred pounds in the past 12 months. The boar is on exhibit in the Swine Barn on the Iowa State Fairgrounds, and spending a lot of time lying down on the job. Stoltzfus says the boar’s gotten so big, its feet and joints started aching in the last month. The animal’s days are numbered — he’ll be slaughtered after the Fair’s over Stoltzfus says “he’ll go to the pepperoni factory.” The boar’s name, by the way, is Pepperoni. This the third boar Stoltzfus has entered in the “Big Boar” contest, and the first time he’s won. Does he have any tricks of the trade to share? Stoltzfus says he’ll keep most of his tricks up his sleeve. He says the main thing is to find a big-boned pig that’ll eat a lot of feed. Stoltzfus raises between 50 and 60 boars, and sells the animals’ semen for insemination in swine herds.
