How’d you like to make some money while paying your taxes? The state’s county treasurers are offering that opportunity. The Iowa State County Treasurer’s Association is trying to encourage the use of their new website, and is running a promotion that will award up to 500 dollars to someone who pays their county taxes on-line by credit card or e-check. Polk County Treasurer Mary Maloney is the past president of the organization. She says it’s a fun way for people to become aware of the website. Maloney says there are several services available from treasurers on-line, and the website gives each treasurer a 24-hour office. Maloney says taxpayers who pay at the website by the September 30th deadline will be entered into a drawing in October to get back up to 500 dollars of their property taxes. She says treasurers benefit from on-line payments. She says the payments get into the county’s bank account faster, they don’t have to be handled by a cashier, and she says it makes the process much more efficient from beginning to end. Maloney says they’ve already had some Iowans pay on-line since tax notices went out. She says about 450 people have paid at the website, with 53-percent using an e-check. and 47-percent using a credit card. A majority of Iowans have their taxes paid by their mortgage company through an escrow account. Maloney says the treasurers are working with those companies to help them use on-line payments. She says they have a few companies participating, and the customers of those companies will also get a chance to win the cash. To pay your taxes on-line, surf to: www.iowatreasurers.org. Maloney says business partners are putting up the money for the contest, so it won’t cost the counties any tax dollars.
