A University of Iowa doctor says more and more people are showing intolerance to a common sweetener found in many foods. Dr. Satish Rao, a professor of internal medicine and a gastroenterologist, says many people are finding problems digesting fructose. He says our body’s ability to digest fructose is limited, as unlike other sugars –sucrose and glucose — there’s no enzyme in our body to help digest fructose. Rao says fructose intolerance can lead to some uncomfortable problems. He says it can lead to bloating or pain, gas, belching and diarrhea. He says theses symptoms can be linked to a lot of other disorders, but there’s a simple test to confirm the fructose intolerance. You drink a solution of sugar and then blow into a bag every half hour and doctors can then diagnose the fructose intolerance. Rao says fructose intolerance can be easily treated. He says the treatment consists of educating the patient to alter their diet to avoid too much fructose. Rao says you can also add glucose to the diet as that will help the body digest the fructose. Fructose can be found in sweeteners such as high fructose corn syrup, soda, fruit juices, candy and certain canned foods. It also occursnaturally in apples, peaches, pears and oranges.
