A Fairfield company is working to build a memorial to American soldiers who’ve died in the war on terror, calling the effort “Operation Americans Supporting Our Troops.” Bob Sawyer of Creative Edge Master Shops says after completing the memorial for the astronauts of the Columbia space shuttle, his company was asked to build a memorial for a soldier in Illinois who died in Iraq. Now, he’s using lasers and high-pressure water to etch granite plaques that are being sent to the families of soldiers killed in the recent military operations. The plaques show the faces of the soldiers, their names and any other information the families want put on them. Sawyer says one copy is sent to the family and the other is being kept at his shop in hopes of building some sort of memorial wall in Iowa.
