A coalition of Iowa cancer experts will release a plan today designed to whip the killer disease. The Iowa Consortium for Comprehensive Cancer Control is a group of more than 100 people from 50 agencies and organizations statewide. Among them, Dr. George Weiner is director of the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Iowa. He says a free seminar will be held today (Oct 1) in Des Moines. He says it’s less of a seminar and more of a rollout of the plan, intended not for physicians but lay people, for people who are interested in decreasing the risk of their getting cancer and their loved ones. Dr. Weiner says the plan includes 50 strategies for addressing cancer problems in Iowa over the next three years.Weiner says prevention is one obvious key to approaching cancer, then early detection with fast, effective treatment. Cancer will be diagnosed this year in 15-thousand-300 Iowans and 64-hundred will die from it. In Iowa, one in four deaths are caused by cancer. Also, more than 65-percent of cancers hit people over age 65 — and Iowa has the nation’s 4th largest percentage of people 65 and older. Weiner says this plan could start reversing some of the figures and trends.Focus areas include getting people to quit using tobacco products, improving their diet and exercise regimens and limiting their exposure to the sun. The seminar is free. It’s scheduled for today from 9 AM to 3:30 P.M. at the Renaissance Savery Hotel in downtown Des Moines.
