Gasoline prices have been dropping in Iowa in recent weeks and are approaching the level of a year ago. Triple-A Motor Club of Iowa spokeswoman Gail Weinholzer says a two-week pre-Labor Day spike was the largest ever seen in the history of tracking fuel prices. Weinholzer says “That was the East Coast blackout, the Arizona pipeline and the high demand for Labor Day weekend. But now that we’re past that, the pipeline has been temporarily fixed down in Arizona, we haven’t had any more problems with energy and the demand has declined significantly now that we’re past Labor Day.” A Triple-A survey finds gas prices in Iowa now average a dollar-46 per gallon, compared to a dollar-39 a year ago and a dollar-64 a month ago. Weinholzer says it’s hard to predict if the trend will continue. She says “One thing that we should watch out for is on September 24th, OPEC did vote to reduce production by 3.5%. So that may have a slight impact heading into the first part of winter.” Weinholzer predicts that impact will be minimal given production was cut by only three-and-a-half percent.
