Iowans join a rally in Washington today for grandparents’ rights. Two and one-third million grandparents are raising their own grandchildren today, after the parents died, were arrested, proved unable to care for the kids…or simply went away. An Iowa director for a grandparents support group, Diana Broderson says they’re people who never thought they’d be raising children in their retirement years and could use some legal rights to custody of the kids they care for.Today’s “GrandRally” in Washington is a production by diverse groups including AARP and the Children’s Defense Fund, as they call for support and resources for “kinship caregivers.”
