The Board of Regents staff is sticking by its recommendation on next year’s tuition rate for Iowa, Iowa State and U-N-I despite a new round of state budget cuts announced late Friday. A recommendation released by the Board of Regents office last week called for an eight-point-three percent increase in tuition for students who’re residents of Iowa. University of Northern Iowa president Robert Koob says despite a new round of cuts to university operations, he’d oppose a heftier tuition hike. Koob says it would be “unfair” to try to solve the new round of budget problems by saddling students with even higher tuition rates. The Board of Regents will discuss the tuition rate hike at its meeting Thursday in Iowa City, but will not vote to set the rate until its November meeting.
