Motorists who are checking out Iowa’s fall color show along the Mississippi River this weekend will have a new series of patriotic-colored signs to follow. The Great River Road that runs along Iowa’s eastern border is being designated a National Scenic Byway. Patsy Ramacitti, chair of the Iowa Mississippi River Parkway Commission, says the road runs three-thousand miles through ten states from the headwaters of the Mississippi River in Minnesota all the way to the Gulf of Mexico. In Iowa, it stretches 326-miles through ten counties. Ramacitti says the well-traveled river road showcases the culture, the history and the splendor of the famous waterway. In a riverfront ceremony at 1:30 this afternoon in downtown Bettendorf, Ramacitti says Governor Vilsack will lift the tarp to reveal the last of about 500 new signs that direct travelers along the Great River Road. The reflective red, white and blue signs read “America’s Byways” and are being added to the existing Great River Road green-and-white paddlewheel logo. The signs mark the first time an entire corridor will be signed under the National Scenic Byway designation.
