This is “National Radon Action Week”, and an Iowa expert says everyone in the state has the potential to be harmed by the odorless, colorless gas. Jim Doolittle oversees the radon testing program for the Iowa Department of Public Health’s “Iowa AIR Coalition.” He says as the weather gets colder and we close things up, it’s a good time to check for all air quality issues, including radon. Doolittle says testing for radon is relatively easy. He says you can buy a “do-it-yourself” kit at the local hardware store and send it in and get back an e-mail or regular mail report on the results. He says you don’t have to worry about the radon until you get the positive test back. Usually radon levels are high enough that they’re going to be immediately dangerous, he says it’s the long term exposure that causes the problem. Doolittle says a home with radon can be easily fixed. He says you usually have to put in ventilation under the slab of your home. He says it will cost around one-thousand dollars, but last for the life or your home.
