Wells makes noise about leaving Le Mars

November 5, 2003 By admin

After some 90 years in the northwest Iowa town of LeMars, Wells Dairy is considering moving its corporate headquarters elsewhere in that region of Iowa or to Nebraska or South Dakota. Wells’ spokesman Dave Smetter says they’re just considering some other possibilities, but they’d like to stay in LeMars. The dairy is developing a plan for a new 30-million dollar corporate office campus. Smetter says they’re going to consider all options before concluding where it’ll be built.Wells C-E-O Gary Wells says while LeMars is a great community, the company has to look at the best interests of the corporation. Smetter says it’s still too early to compare the tax breaks and other financial offers provided by the three states, but he thinks a decision should be made around mid-2004. He says they have to look at all the incentives that’re available, including the Iowa Values fund.Smetter says there’s a need to have the corporate offices, research and development and information systems all in one place. The maker of Blue Bunny ice cream currently has 440 workers on its corporate staff.
