Iowans are being urged to quiz the many presidential candidates tromping through the state about their views on fighting AIDS. Mara Vanderslice is spokeswoman for the group “Iowans For AIDS Action.” Vanderslice says “The power to end AIDS starts in Iowa because if we can get these candidates to make a strong committment here, we believe that will be an investment and a downpayment to what’s needed to end the AIDS crisis.” She says AIDS is considered by many Iowans to be “the most pressing international moral concern of our time.”Vanderslice says AIDS is killing eight-thousand people a day and killed three-million people globally last year. 42-million worldwide are now infected. During a recent trip to Africa, Vanderslice said she was told “If you’re not infected, you’re affected.” She’s helping push Iowans to question Democrat presidential hopefuls, and President Bush, about the issue.Iowans for AIDS Action plans to open an exhibit of work done by a South African photographer today (Saturday) in Iowa City.
