Sac County development officials look to gambling vote

November 17, 2003 By admin

Sac County is the latest county to launch an effort to land a new gambling facility. The Wall Lake Economic Development Corporation is heading up a petition drive for a public vote on the issue in January. Wall Lake city manager Tom Schroeder says 385 signatures are needed to call for an election, though he admits, it would take more than just that county’s backing to launch a gambling hall. He says the surrounding counties have to support it too.Supporters believe a gambling boat in Hallett’s Pit between Lake View and Wall Lake can be a boost to the economic development of the county, while complimenting the county’s biggest tourist attraction, Black Hawk Lake. Schroeder says a gambling boat could generate between 200 and 250 jobs. He says 70-percent support would be needed to get the license. The State Racing and Gaming Commission is still considering lifting a moratorium on granting new gambling licenses.
