The sounds of winter have returned to Iowa, though winter doesn’t officially begin until December 22nd.Some areas of the state got up to four inches of snow over the weekend. With slick, icy, snowy roads across parts of central and northwest Iowa this morning, officials are urging motorists to use their winter driving skills. Dawn Duffy is spokeswoman for Triple-A-Iowa. Duffy says to “Put plenty of time into your schedule. Have plenty of distance between you and the vehicle in front of you and by all means if you park outside, make sure to brush off your vehicle completely, the top, the trunk, the hood, all of the lights, everything.” Duffy says just because you’re behind the wheel of a vehicle with four-wheel drive doesn’t mean you’re immune to poor road conditions. She says “For those people who have S-U-V’s, they drive so much better in these conditions, however they do not stop better.” Duffy says drivers need to make sure they’re plenty of room between themselves and the car in front of them. Duffy says “We do have slippery roads, if you can get three, four car distances in front of you. Just make sure to read the conditions and by all means, just err on the side of safety.”
