The 58th meeting between Drake and Iowa is tonight in Iowa City and the circumstances surronding the contest are getting more attention than the game itself. It will mark the return to Carver-Hawkeye Arena for Drake coach Tom Davis whose 13-year run as Hawkeye head coach ended in 1999. He says there will be some “weirdness” to it, but he says once you get into the pregame routine, it’s pretty much like other games.Davis had a solid record in the in-state competiton while at Iowa but now leads a Drake program which has lost the last 24-games in the series. Davis says he likes the potential of this Iowa team as he says they have a good mix of inside and outside players.Iowa will have a significant advantage in terms of size but Davis is not building a game-plan around that. He says as a coach he has to go with what he has and stress that, instead of having too much negative thinking. He says his team has good quickness. Iowa coach Steve Alford says they will try to use their advantage in the paint. He says they’ve always been a team that wants to ge the ball inside, and he says when you play a pressing team, you have to be smart about what you do.Alford says the Hawkeyes have spent some of their practice time the last couple of weeks working against the press. He says the most important thing is to handle the ball to be able to get some easy looks down the floor. Alford says this game will give them a good read on where they are when it comes to handling the basketball. Alford says the players are aware of the interest in the return of Tom Davis, but he says with just one day to prepare after their season opener, the hoopla is limited. He says if there were five or six days to prepare — there’d be more hype. Iowa has dominated the all-time series with 50 victories. Drake has seven, the last one in 1978.
