Trial of former Webster County Sheriff stopped

December 9, 2003 By admin

A surprise development today in the trial of a former Webster County Sheriff. District Judge Michael Moon stopped the trial of former sheriff Chuck Griggs, saying he’s incompetent. Moon received a report from University Hospitals in Iowa City that concluded Griggs is impaired as a result of cerebral vascular disease and cannot participate in his own defense. Back in 1992, Griggs suffered a serious stroke and his health has been deteriorating. The former sheriff’s accused of improperly spending more than 10-thousand dollars over a six-year period. The election to replace Griggs is going on today. Democrat James Stubbs was appointed by supervisors this fall but county residents submitted a petition calling for an election, and he’s facing off with Republican Brian Mickelson for the sheriff’s post.
