Post Office says you should clear a path for carriers

December 10, 2003 By admin

After the overnight winter blast, postal carriers are reminding Iowans to clean off their sidewalks and front porches so they can safely deliver the mail. Mason City postmaster Robert Hartfield says they’d like people to remove the snow as quickly as possible.Try to have sidewalks or driveways cleared off within a day or two after snow falls so that the carriers do not get hurt and mail service does not get suspended to your home. Hartfield says some spots are a little more dangerous if not cleaned off then others. Make sure to clean off stairs and porches, especially if they are painted because they can become very slippery and cause a carrier to twist an ankle or sprain a knee. Hartfield says they do not have enough carriers to provide regular service if carriers start to get hurt.
