A fifteen-year-old boy in the Des Moines suburb of Urbandale is charged with counterfeiting money. Sergeant Dave Disney says it began with lunchroom workers at Urbandale High School who found a phoney five-dollar bill. The school’s resource officer helped with the investigation and turned up the young man’s name, after which police got a search warrant for his home and seized a computer, printer and scanner and more bills. The teen had spent some of the fake cash at a Des Moines shopping mall.Apparently it was mostly on fast food, though the boy had approached a customer shopping at the mall and exchanged a couple phony fives for a real ten-dollar bill. He calls it “pretty bold for a fifteen-year-old” and says he’s glad the boy was caught before he graduated to making tens, twenties or hundreds. The Secret Service will probably not join this investigation, though Sergeant Disney says the federal agents usually do get involved in such cases. He says right at the top of a dollar bill it’s labeled a federal reserve note, but says the federal agents may not get involved since this is a small-scale case and involves only one juvenile — but the boy will be facing state charges. At the height of the shopping season, the sergeant says this may be a cautionary tale for people thinking of taking advantage of all the money being spent on holiday gifts.
