Gallery hopes to tackle trophy as top lineman

December 11, 2003 By admin

Robert Gallery hopes to become the third Iowa Hawkeye to win the Outland Trophy as the nation’s top lineman. The offensive tackle is one of three finalists for the award which will be announced tonight in Orlando during the Home Depot College Football Awards on E-S-P-N. He says he’ll be disappointed if he loses, but if it doesn’t work out, there’ll be better things down the road. Gallery was a redshirt freshman in 1999 when the Hawkeyes finished 1-10. His career will end in Iowa’s second straight January Bowl. He says it was tough at first, but he says he knew they had a good staff and could turn things around. Gallery says he also knew they would have a good season this year despite losing several starters from last year’s team. Two other Hawkeyes have won the Outland Trophy. Cal Jones won it in 1955 and Alex Karras won the award in 1957.
