This will be the second year the Internal Revenue Service will offer free electronic tax return filing, and a spokesman says they’ve made several changes to improve the process. Erick Smith says one of the biggest changes makes it clearer who can use the service. He says each of the participating companies makes it clearer who is eligible for the free service. He says the eligibility guidelines are set by each company. Smith says another change requires the companies to let you know exactly what they offer. He says some companies are involved in selling other services, and they’re required to let you know those services are not required for you to be able to e-file your taxes. Smith says the requirements are based on several factors. He says income plays a role with some companies, while for others it’s military service, age or where you live. Smith says nearly three million people used the service in the first year.He says filing electronically, through the I-R-S, or through another company, allows you to get your refund much faster. Smith says it’s easy to use the free I-R-S services. He says you can go to the I-R-S website and click on the free filing link. Smith says some of the companies that offer the free filing will also file your state taxes for you too. He say some offer the state filing for a charge.
