Governor Tom Vilsack says he’s been assured by the director of Iowa’s prison system that all appropriate steps have been taken to guard against the kind of 15-day-long hostage situation that just ended in Arizona.Department of Corrections director Gary Maynard has assured Vilsack all that can be done has been done, given the state’s limited resources. Vilsack says Maynard has had a substantial amount of experience in dealing with hostage situations. And Vilsack praised Arizona’s governor and her staff for their actions and patience in ending the standoff without anyone being harmed.
