There’s an interesting twist to the gambling tax controversy. On Tuesday, the Iowa Supreme Court ruled the state’s two-tiered system for taxing gambling enterprises was unconstitutional. Last spring, the Iowa Supreme Court and the Court of Appeals moved into the new state Judicial Building, a rather grand and stately structure capped by a dome. The building was paid for by gambling taxes. Republican legislative leaders noted the irony of that, and while agitated by the court’s ruling on gambling taxes, they have refrained, so far, from saying anything else about the state court house that gambling built.
