The Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau launched a campaign today try and get adults to use booster seats in their cars for kids over four years old. The campaign features Iowa kids singing the “Boost Your Booty” song in an attempt to get parents to put kids that’re too old for a car seat into the booster seat. Lisa Roth of the state Health Department says less than 10-percent of Iowa kids are properly placed in booster seats. She says Iowa research shows that we’re forgetting kids who’re booster seat age. Roth says kids can be seriously injured in a car accident by the very seatbelt meant to save them if they don’t have a booster seat, because the safety belts are designed for adults, not children. Roth says children should not use a seatbelt without a booster seat until they’re at least 12. She says the booster seat raises them up so the seatbelt fits properly. The “Boost Your Booty” campaign public service messages feature a 70s style design that Roth hopes will make an impact. She says the campaign was developed for parents and caregivers to raise their awareness so they don’t move a kid into a seatbelt too soon. The messages will soon appear on TV, radio, billboards and in newspapers.
