A report being released today criticizing the F-B-I’s use of bullets as courtroom evidence backs up an Iowa State University study done several years ago — a study that was reportedly hushed up because it damaged the F-B-I’s credibility. Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley says today’s report is from the National Research Council. Grassley says the I-S-U study, and the new study, question F-B-I tactics in using bullets as evidence in as many as one-thousand criminal cases. He says he’s not surprised the I-S-U report was suppressed. The one-hundred-thousand-dollar study was paid for, in part, by the F-B-I. Grassley says “that’s typical” of the F-B-I to quiet a report if it doesn’t support the Bureau’s goals. The report could mean the reversal of thousands more cases where ballistics experts used microscopic evidence to link bullets with weapons.
