Democrats say they’re glad Senate Republicans have pledged to provide Iowa cities and counties 160-million in state aid to cover property tax credits. But Senate Democrat Leader Michael Gronstal of Council Bluffs says that’s 20-million dollars short, and local governments will be hard pressed to make up the difference. Gronstal says the republican plan doesn’t provide enough money for homestead credits, veterans credits, low income elderly credits and low income renters credits. He says that means Iowans who receive those credits will see property tax increases as local governments make up that 20-million dollar shortfall. State officials long ago established the property tax credits to promote home ownership, and Gronstal says it’s important for the state to continue to follow through with the money so city and county governments don’t have to cover the cost.
