The daughter of Iowa Senator Tom Harkin is featured in a new reality show. Amy Harkin is featured along with five other women in the show called “Starting Over” — which follows the women as they try to decide what they want to do with their lives. Harkin talked about the experience during an interview on the N-B-C Today Show — saying she never started her own career after marrying a professional basketball player. She says she grew up in a household where both her parents worked and it was never an option that she wouldn’t work. But she says five years after graduating from Princeton she took a look at herself and said “wow, what’s going on?” She says it’s something that happens a lot when women get lost in their husband’s career. Harkin says she was skeptical at first when she got on the program which introduced her to “life coaching” for the first time. She says it was a give and take situation when she questioned why they were having her write so much and doing crazy exercises. Harkin says she had to dress like a clown and take a course in kickboxing as part of the show. While she was skeptical at first — she says it worked. She says the results are “incredible, incredible, amazing.” Harkin says she did find a career. She says she doesn’t want to give away the show, but says she ended up doing something with “travel related.” She says it really led her to rediscover herself “and really rediscovering the things that make me happy and my passions in life. And, it’s a new lease on life for me.” Harkin’s father the Iowa Democrat, is featured on the show a couple of times as he calls his daughter for encouragement. The show “Starting Over” begins next Thursday (February 26th) at 10 a.m. Iowa time on N-B-C.
