The Iowa Supreme Court has taken the rare and unusual step of issuing a public comment on recently-publicized cases involving local officials who’ve allowed folks to buy off their traffic tickets. The Iowa Supreme Court’s justices are “troubled” by the practice of allowing people to make a charitable contribution or pay a higher fine in order to get a speeding ticket reduced or changed to something else. The court says the practices “call into question the independence and integrity of the court system.” The justices also told lower court judges and magistrates they must not sign-off on guilty pleas for citations for a headlight failure when the person was originally cited for speeding. The Court’s also asking the legislature to repeal any law that allows donations to charities and local anti-crime organizations as sentencing options.
