Its title was far from courteous, but the defiant cry of “Take This Job and Shove It” became part of our nation’s lexicon almost three decades ago — with a distinct Iowa tie. Long before “Twister,” “The Bridges of Madison County” and “Field of Dreams,” another Iowa-made movie hit the big screen, which until this week, hasn’t been available for the little screen on D-V-D. Country singer Johnny Paycheck’s hit song from 1977 was the focus of the movie of the same name, released in 1981. It was filmed almost entirely in northeast Iowa, in and around Dubuque’s Star and Pickett brewery. Paycheck and many Iowans were used as extras in the film, which starred Robert Hays as a Dubuque native returning to his hometown as the brewery’s corporate hatchet man.The D-V-D is due in stores this week.
