A Strawberry Point man has admitted he broke the law in connection with an ultra-light plane crash that killed his wife. Fifty-five-year-old Keith Kelly was the pilot of two-seat ultra-light that crashed just southeast of Shellsburg last August. Kelly’s 54-year-old wife, Elaine, was a passenger and died in the accident. According to F-A-A officials, Kelly paid over a thousand dollars in civil penalties last month for a variety of violations. He was cited for flying in a reckless manner, flying without a current pilot’s certificate or a medical certificate, flying an aircraft that lacked airworthiness and flying an aircraft without registration certificates. It’s not usually necessary to have a pilot’s license to fly an ultra-light aircraft, but Kelly’s two-seat plane aircraft exceeded F-A-A limits for ultra-light vehicles.
