With the latest low-carb and no-carb food fad, Iowa’s so-called Ice Cream Capital of the World is offering a new line of products being touted as very low in carbohydrates. Dave Smetter, marketing director for LeMars-based Wells Dairy, says they’re constantly researching what new products consumers may want. The new Blue Bunny line is called Carb Freedom which includes ice cream, novelty bars and frozen yogurt. Smetter says the low-carb products are hitting grocery stores in Iowa this month and so far, they’re selling well.He says pre-orders from grocery stores are “way up” and consumers are snapping up the products, following the current carb-free craze. Some of the dairy deserts have as little as four grams of fat and two grams of net carbs per half-cup serving. Smetter says Americans consume more than 20-point-five billion dollars in ice cream every year and consumers are demanding a low-carb alternative.LeMars calls itself the Ice Cream Capital of the World as more ice cream is made in the northwest Iowa town than any other place on the planet.
