Top ranked Harlan drained 12 three pointers as the Cyclones rolled past Cedar Rapids Xavier 70-50 in a class 3A quarterfinal round game of the Boys’ State Basketball Tournament in Des Moines. Billy Miller had 20-points, including six threes as Harlan improved to 25-0. Miller says he thought they’d be out guarding the threes a little more, and says it looks like they underestimated their ability to hit the three.Xavier coach Dick Breitbach says the Cyclones were difficult to defend. He says when they did their help defense, Harlan found the open man and made the shots.Norwalk used a 17-0 run in the second quarter then held off a second half rally by Benton Van Horne for a 63-52 win. It is the Warriors first win ever at the state tournament.After the game, forward Adam Thorson said it was overwhelming and still hadn’t sunk in after all the work they’ve put in. Thorson who led Norwalk with 23-points. Thorson said their sagging defense was designed to offset Benton’s interior game.Benton coach Larry Carlson says his kids hustled and battled hard, but unfortunately they couldn’t get over the hill.Crestwood’s first-ever trip to the tournament ended with a win. The third ranked Cadets got 14-points from Andy Grube to edge Spencer 63-59. Grube says they shook off some early jitters before outscoring Spencer 21-10 in the second quarter to take command. Spencer coach Bob Haak says his kids represented Spencer in a great way and showed they deserved to be in the tourney. In class 2A, Pella Christian made it to the championship game in its six previous trips to state. A late comeback avoided a first round exit this time. Luke Branderhorst’s rebound basket with 35 seconds remaining proved to be the game winner as the Eagles erased a ten point fourth quarter deficit to down Wapsie Valley 56-53. Wapsie Valley was outscored 15-2 in the final quarter but coach Marty McKowen said it was a great season for his team.
