The quarterfinal round is complete at the Boys’ State Basketball Tournament and the defending champs in 4A are still alive. Carlton Reed had 28 points, including six of 11 from three point range as Waterloo East held off Cedar Rapids Washington 49-44 and avenged a regular season loss to the Warriors. Reed says Washington beat them on senior night at home in their last game, and he says it feels good to beat them. Reed says it was a sense of relief when the game was over. He says his team showed it has a lot of heart and pulled out a good win against a good team in a close game.Steven Wetrich scored 26-points as Ottumwa erased a seven point fourth quarter deficit to edge Johnston 50-49. Wetrich’s three pointer broke a 46-all tie with just over a minute remaining. He says his coach gave him the green light to shoot when he was open — and he took the opportunity.Johnston coach Jeff Simpson says his team is hurting and there’s nothing they can do to take the hurt away. He says the team will look back later and realize they’ve done a lot of good things.Top seeded Linn-Mar roared away in the second half and outscored Marshalltown 32-6 in the final quarter in an 80-35 win. Sophomore Jason Bohannon led a balanced Linn-Mar attack. He finished with 14 points, and says they played one of their best games. Marshalltown coach Jerry Nikkel says it was a “heck of a butt kicking,” and says they just couldn’t stop them in the second half. Third ranked Bettendorf survived an upset bid by Sioux City North as the Bulldogs claimed a 53-51 victory in overtime. North had a chance at the end but Greg Nelsons three pointer from the top of the key rimmed out at the buzzer.Bettendorf coach Kevin Skillett says they feel fortunate to get the win. He says you see those scrambles so many times end up with a shot being made, but he says they found a way to win it.
