Iowa’s state auditor is looking into a generous gym-class equipment offer some Iowa schools have accepted. Radio Iowa reported a few weeks ago on how Avoca Community school’s the latest of nearly two dozen in the state to take up the offer by the National School Fitness Foundation. Schools raise money for a gym full of exercise equipment and promise to share data on their students’ workout progress in exchange for the foundation paying off the cost of the high-tech exercise machines…things like weightlifting equipment, treadmills, and stair-steppers. The foundation says when it paid up front, some schools failed to share the student health information as promised, but the Minnesota state auditor says its promise to pay off the cost of the equipment could leave schools on the hook if the NSFF goes out of business. Iowa’s auditor Dave Vaudt says state law allows the agreement and adds he’s looking into the risk for schools, but considers it very small.
