Eustachy hired at Southern Mississippi

March 25, 2004 By admin

It was nearly one year ago that former Iowa State men’s basketball coach Larry Eustachy was forced to resign after pictures were published showing him partying with college coeds after a game with Missouri. Today Southern Mississippi named Eustachy their new head coach. Eustachy held a news conference on March 30th of 2003 to announce he was an alcoholic, and plead for his job. I-S-U Athletic Director Bruce VandeVelde announced a few hours later that he was recommending that the coach be fired.Eustachy reached an agreement to resign just a few days later after negotiating a nearly one-million dollar buyout. The 48-year-old Eustachy will take over a Southern Mississippi team that went 13-15 last year. James Green, a former Iowa State assistant coach resigned the head job at Southern Miss after eight seasons. The news release on the university’s website announcing the hiring of Eustachy highlights his successes in coaching, but makes no mention of the situation that caused Eustachy to resign.
