The Iowa Attorney General has asked a judge to shut down an adult education program in Council Bluffs. Bob Brammer is a spokesman for the Attorney General’s office. He says it’s called the “California Alternative High School,” and he says it apparently appealed to lower-income Latino and immigrant students. He says they would charge 600 dollars for 10 weeks of classes, but only three hours a week. Brammer says the degree apparently wasn’t worth the money spent. He says they claimed they were giving a high school diploma that would qualify the recipient for acceptance to a college or university. Brammer says the state doesn’t believe that’s true. He says they’ve had a hard time getting information out of the company. He says they haven’t gotten enough cooperation in the subpoenas they’ve issued, so they’re asking the court to shut the company down. He says they think the company may be out of business. Brammer says they don’t know how many people in Iowa may’ve used the service, as that’s in the information they’ve been trying unsuccessfully to secure.
