Now that spring has arrived and as people start to clean up their yards, county conservation officials are asking the public to be on the lookout for illegal dumping. Mike Webb has seen the problem in his work with the Cerro Gordo County Conservation Board. He says people take sticks and other stuff to parking lots and road ditches and dump it off. Webb says people do not realize what environmental problems can arise from dumping your yard waste into places where it should not be dumped. If waste is dumped in plastic sacks, those sacks can kill grass underneath the site and that in turn will cause weeds to grown in and that leads to a bigger mess. Webb says if you see someone dumping things illegally, do not hesitate to call the authorities. He says if you can get a license plate number, call the local sheriff’s department, or in the city, call the police department. Webb says if you have questions about getting rid of materials, contact your local waste hauler.
