Former Atlantic standout Bret Meyer leads the race to become the starting quarterback at Iowa State. Meyer is part of a three-way battle for the job that includes senior Chris Love and Austin Flynn, who started seven games last season.Iowa State coach Dan McCarney says Meyer is listed as number one because he’s been a little more consistent and made a few more plays, but he says it’s a close race after two scrimmages. McCarney says he would not hesitate starting a redshirt freshman at quarterback for the second straight season. He says if he’s the best, most talented, most consistent and has the best performance, he doesn’t worry about it at all. McCarney says they would like to have a starter at the end of spring drills. He says he won’t make a decision unless he knows it’s real and accurate. But he says they’re only one-third of the way through their practices. Iowa State’s spring game is April 17th.
