A key area the University of Northern Iowa football team will be looking at during spring drills is finding depth at quarterback. UNI goes into spring drills with Tom Petrie firmly established as the number-one QB. Petrie is a three-year starter and the only quarterback with collegiate experience. Five redshirt freshman are currently battling for the number two spot at signal caller. Panther coach Mark Farley doesn’t feel the backup quarterback spot has to be solidified by the end of spring drills. Farley says it doesn’t have to be set, he just wants to know the direction they’re going. He says there’s such a big gap between Petrie and the young players seeking to be his backup. Farley says it is important to have a backup they have confidence in. He says you always have to have a plan “B” should something happen. UNI will have their first spring scrimmage this Saturday morning at 9:15 at the UNI-Dome.
