Freshman still on top in ISU QB race

Bret Meyer is another step closer to becoming the starting quarterback at Iowa State. The Atlantic native is listed as the starter heading into Saturday’s spring game. He has a narrow lead over Austin Flynn who started seven games last season.Cyclone coach Dan McCarney who says Saturday’s game will be a final chance to evaluate. He says they won’t ask him to audible and change a lot of plays. He says he wants to see Meyer lead the offense starting with a three touchdown deficit. He says is Meyer comes out of it and looks like the starter, then he’ll be the starter going into fall. McCarney says if he struggles, then things will be wide open going into fall two-a-days. McCarney says Meyer has done the things it takes in practice to run the offense. He says it’s being a leader, being someone the team can trust to take them down the field and score some points. McCarney says Meyer has a real bright future at Iowa State. Meyer will direct the cardinal squad which will include the first and fourth teamers. He says it will be a great chance to go out and show what the team is going to be like this year.Meyer says he wants a good showing to end spring practice. He says everybody needs to have a good spring game to get a positive felling heading into the fall.Meyer says he is ready to take the offense into the season opener against Northern Iowa. He says he feels like all the quarterbacks are ready and whoever the coaches chose will represent the team well.
