Iowa bankers are visiting K-through-12 classrooms this week as part of National Teach Children To Save Day, which is Thursday. Debra Hurston, with the Midwest Bankers Association, says money-managing skills are often -not- learned at home so bankers are headed into schools to talk directly to kids as part of the national effort. “A big component of it is teaching them how interest rates work, it teaches them money management, it teaches them how to manage credit.” Hurston explains how the national campaign came into being. “What we found through studies that have come out from Jump Start Coalition is that kids did not have the tools they needed to prepare themselves to do basic money management and they weren’t getting the skills at home.” Hurston says by the time kids reach college, they’re inundated with credit cards, which many young people don’t know how to handle.
