Truck carrying ink overturns on I-80

April 22, 2004 By admin

Emergency officials are trying to avoid some unwanted spring color along Interstate 80 after a tanker truck full of printer’s ink overturned just east of the Grinnell exit. Daniel Buttonhagen was headed to Elmira, Wisconsin from Greenfield, Iowa when his truck rolled over just before noon.He says he just hit the shoulder and lost it. Buttonhagen was not injured. None of the ink spilled in the accident, and Poweshiek County Emergency Services coordinator Doug Shutts says they’re trying to avoid that as they tip the truck back over. He says they’re trying to offload the ink before they set the truck up, as he says the fire department’s worried the truck will break in two if they don’t empty the load. Shutts says they’re doing what they can to prevent damage if the truck does break open. He says they don’t want it to run into a waterway, that’s the first concern. He says they’re putting up a dam to keep it from running anywhere, and then when they get done unloading they’ll clean up the dirt. Shutts says they will get the truck back on its wheels today, but won’t get it out of the ditch until tomorrow.
