Iowa expected to see several taken in NFL draft

April 23, 2004 By admin

Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz expects several Hawkeyes to be taken in this weekend’s NFL draft in New York City. The most attention has been given to offensive tackle Robert Gallery who should be one of the first players taken. Many analysts feel Gallery will have a standout career but his first priority is to get established. Gallery says he just wants to go in and have a good solid year. Gallery says he is preparing to make an adjustment to a new level of play. He says there are a lot of things that go along with being a rookie, especially at his position. He says it’ll be like being a freshman again.Nate Kaeding hopes to buck the trend and become an early draft pick. That is unusual for a kicker but Kaeding feels there is a better chance this year. He says it looks like there’s about three or four teams that have a need for a kicker. Kickers may not be a hot commodity on draft day but the trade off is longevity the position offers. He says compared to a runningback that may have a four year career, he says kickers can play for many years, citing Morten Anderson who has played for 24 years.
