Some involved in the VEISHEA disturbances earlier this month in Ames complained cops provoked rioters and made the situation worse by releasing tear gas. Others have said they were not rioting, but were subjected to tear gas and pepper spray. Ames Mayor Ted Tedesco has asked for a state review. Tedesco says “in order to leave no stone unturned,” he’s asked the Iowa Attorney General’s office to review all complaints made about law enforcement actions in Ames on April 18th. Tedesco says if the complaints are warranted, the Attorney General will forward them to the Department of Criminal Investigation. Tedesco’s also asked the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy to review the crowd-control measures Ames police and other law enforcement agencies used at VEISHEA. Tedesco has been asked by Iowa State University’s president to be part of a task force that will help decide whether VEISHEA will continue and what changes should be made. Tedesco calls it a “total community effort” to make future VEISHEA celebrations safe. This morning, Iowa State University president Gregory Geoffroy announced VEISHEA will not be held next year, and changes must be made if the student-led celebration is to continue.
