A doctor barred from doing surgery in Iowa has lost his appeal of the case. The Iowa Board of Medical Examiners suspended Dr. Daniel Miulli’s license to perform surgery after several other doctors in Des Moines complained that he was doing “excessively aggressive surgeries.” The Board expressed “serous concerns” about the doctor’s clinical judgment and said he was guilty of “practices harmful or detrimental to the public.” Miulli complained that his license was suspended before a hearing was held, and that violated his constitutional rights. The Iowa Court of Appeals has ruled the Board of Medical Examiners has a “strong interest in protecting the public from incompetent doctors” and acted appropriately. The Court cited “substantial evidence” — including one case in which a patient of Miulli’s lost their sight as a result of surgery.
