Cass County deputy injured by stolen planter

May 3, 2004 By admin

A Cass County Deputy Sheriff is recovering from eye injuries suffered in a traffic accident this weekend. Cass County Sheriff Larry Jones says the accident happened on Iowa Highway 83 near Atlantic at about nine Sunday night. Jones says the Deputy, Chris Heuton, was driving eastbound when the windshield of his vehicle struck an eight-row planter that was being pulled west across a bridge. Jones says Heuton did not see the planter, which had been stolen from an implement dealer in Atlantic. The man pulling the planter drove another 300 yards after the accident, then pulled the pin of the planter and left it in the middle of the highway before fleeing on foot. Several law enforcement agencies tried, unsuccessfully, to find the man. Heuton suffered injuries from the glass in his eyes, and Sheriff Jones says he was scheduled to undergo an M-R-I test today to check for further damage.
