Chicago man dies after being hit by truck on I-80

May 6, 2004 By admin

A Chicago man was killed yesterday afternoon after darting into traffic on Interstate-80 about a half-hour west of Des Moines. According to the Iowa State Patrol, around 3:45 p.m. Wednesday, 18-year-old Daniel Deanda was trying to retrieve something from the inside, eastbound lane of the interstate near Dexter. Deanda was struck by a semi-truck. The truck driver, David Brooks of West Valley, Utah, tried to avoid the pedestrian in the roadway, braking and swerving according to the state patrol. Deanda was thrown to the right shoulder of the interstate by the impact. He was flown to Mercy Hospital in Des Moines with severe head trauma. Deanda was pronounced dead at the hospital later Wednesday evening.
