Effort underway to get kids fit

May 8, 2004 By admin

Today is the deadline for Iowa schools to register for an event on Wednesday that will celebrate National Fitness month. Go The Distance Day is sponsored by the Iowa Games and is desinged to inform kids about the benefits of physical fitness.
Iowa Games executive director Jim Hallihan says “Go the Distance Day” is an addition to a current program they sponsor and is simmilar to a fitness day held in the state of Wisconsin. Students are required to be physically active for 30 straight minutes and have the opportunity to win a 500 dollar prize. There will be five drawings of 500 dollars each that will go back to the P-E department of the schools. Hallihan feels participation levels will be even higher after the first year. He expects close to 25-thousand participating.
