School’s out at Iowa State University, but I-S-U campus police today arrested a 20-year-old freshman for possessing explosive devices in his dorm room. Campus police captain Gene Deisinger says John Morris of Ames turned himself in at about nine this (Wednesday) morning when he learned there was a warrant for his arrest. In the early-morning hours of May 9th, I-S-U dormitory staff contacted Ames police after a residence assistant spotted something in a dorm room that he thought was an explosive device. The R-A came back that evening and talked with Morris. The resident assistant determined there did appear to be bombs in the room and took custody of them. The campus police report says the student admitted he’d packed gunpowder into empty carbon dioxide containers, intending to use them to catch or destroy turtles at a camp where he has a summer job. Deisinger says there’s no evidence Morris intended to use the C-O-2 canister devices to harm anyone or other property. Deisinger says Morris’ level of cooperation will be reflected in the report handed in for the court’s review. Deisinger points out it’s a violation of university policy as well as the residence-hall contract to possess any kind of weapon or explosive on school property. The case will be provided to the dean of students who’ll decide if there’s to be any university punishment of the student. Morris is a freshman in Animal Ecology, and was booked into the Story County jail on 10-thousand dollars bond.
